NeuroKinetic Therapy (commonly referred to as NKT) has been around since the 1980’s. Its a form of manual muscle testing that focuses on fiber orientation of muscles fibers rather than actions.
Look at all the fibre orientations of the Latissimus Dorsi. Some go vertical, some horizontal, some diagonally.
Unlike traditional muscle testing and NKT practitioner uses very light pressure testing muscle fiber orientation and looking for compensations going on throughout the body. For example when testing the transverse abdominis muscle sometimes people clench their teeth or hold their breath to brace. We use that information to dig a little deeper and find out the real cause of a pain, discomfort, or tightness, and increase performance. What these compensations reveal is how your body decides to use a certain muscle.
In the example above we know that the patient likes to clench their teeth while the transverse abdominis muscle is tested. We know that people use their transverse abdominis muscle to build intra-abdominal pressure ( IAP) and as a muscle that assist with exhalation, it also attaches to the middle layer of the thoracolumbar fascia. It plays a big role in the day to day functions of your body so if its compromised you may feel pain in your low back, shoulder, even jaw.
Some Conditions that NKT can help:
- Neck and Jaw pain ( including whiplash and TMD)
- Low Back Pain
- Nerve pain, radiculopathy
- Piriformis syndrome
- Shoulder pain
- Knee pain
- Bursitis and tendonitis
- Postural dysfunctions
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Muscle/ joint strains, and tears
How many sessions does it take? A lot of this depends on how chronic the injury is. Usually people feel 80% better in 4-6 sessions if they do their home exercises.
